I am Steven Piers, and my focus is on sustainability at Cotton Inc. Cotton composting is an exciting new concept for apparel and textile sustainability. It can mimic waste cycles by transforming textile scraps, production byproducts, and garments themselves—at end of life—into nutrient-rich organic matter. Typically, cotton breaks down in a compost environment in around 90 days. On the contrary, a synthetic garment would take much longer.
Brands and retailers should know that cotton composting offers a sustainable solution that not only reduces waste, but can also support soil health and contribute to a circular economy.
