My name is Dr. Jesse Daystar. I’m working to help the cotton industry be more sustainable. A study by the World Wildlife Fund found that the average person consumes a credit card’s worth of plastic every week. That’s quite concerning.
All clothing sheds little pieces of fiber, but what’s important about cotton is that it is biodegradable in a relatively short time. Meanwhile, synthetic microfibers take hundreds—if not thousands—of years to decompose.
The biodegradability of apparel is crucial for reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing environmental impact. Cotton can decompose under the right conditions and doesn’t contribute to microplastic pollution.
