Cotton is more than just tee shirts and jeans; it could be the next fuel source for automobiles!
Power Japan Plus, a startup materials engineering company, has developed a battery powered by a carbon complex made of organic cotton, rather than rare earth metals, like lithium.
In a company press release, Power Japan Plus states that its 100-percent recyclable, Ryden dual-carbon battery generates more power and charges 20 times faster than the widely used lithium-ion battery. Further, the company’s CTO, Kaname Takeya says the company has strived to ensure the battery excels in performance, safety, cost and reliability, a move that could enable broader applications.
The startup is already exploring a variety of applications for their cotton-powered technology and recently began utilizing the technology to develop an electric vehicle battery, a development that many experts predict could increase the number of electric cars on the road.
