HanesBrands, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Kohl’s® and Life Is Good® recently joined the Cotton LEADS™ program. The program represents approximately 17 percent of the global cotton supply-chain including more than 300 partners. Working to illustrate responsible production practices of cotton growers in Australia and the United States, the Cotton LEADS™ program is committed to continuous improvements in growing practices within these countries.
In a recent press release, Cotton Incorporated’s Mark Messura, senior vice president of Supply Chain Marketing, explained that by becoming a Cotton LEADS™ partner, brands are acknowledging the environmental gains achieved by Cotton LEADS™ growers and that cotton produced under the program’s principles, meet the sustainability guidelines for their cotton products.
Messura also noted that the program aims to assure the apparel industry that the cotton entering their supply chain is being produced responsibly.
This month, U.S. based partners, including representatives from more than 20 brands, retailers and businesses, gathered in Gastonia, North Carolina to announce the program’s latest additions and share recent trends and activities. Growers along with representatives from the National Cotton Council of America and Cotton Australia presented findings and tools to the assembly that showcase and share best practices.
Later in the year, the Cotton LEADS™ program will also host a scientists’ roundtable to discuss research priorities for the program and the dissemination of that research to the global cotton community.
The Cotton LEADS™ program is a joint effort of the Australian cotton industry and the U.S. cotton industry as a project of the Cotton Foundation. For more information on the program, visit http://www.cottonleads.org.
